HR Glossary: People Strategy Terms and Definitions

Term: High-Potential (HiPo) Employee

What Is a High-Potential (HiPo) Employee?

A High-Potential (HiPo) employee is an employee who demonstrates the ability and potential to take on greater responsibilities, more complex roles, or leadership positions in the future.

Being a high performer in a current role does not automatically make someone a HiPo employee. Performance reflects what an employee is achieving today, while potential considers their capacity to succeed in future roles.

Why Are HiPo Employees Important?

Identifying high-potential employees can help organizations:

  • Build a stronger future leadership pipeline
  • Prepare employees for critical roles
  • Focus development resources where they can have the greatest impact
  • Improve internal mobility
  • Strengthen succession planning
  • Retain employees who have significant future potential

What Can Indicate High Potential?

Potential can be evaluated through multiple perspectives, such as:

  • Performance – Consistently delivering strong results in the current role.
  • Learning Agility – Ability and willingness to learn and adapt to new situations.
  • Leadership Capability – Demonstrating the ability to influence, guide, and take responsibility.
  • Behavioral Characteristics – Understanding how an employee’s natural behaviors may support future responsibilities.
  • Motivation – Understanding the factors that drive an employee and their willingness to grow.
  • Readiness – Assessing whether the employee is prepared for greater responsibility now or what development is needed first.

High-Potential vs. High-Performing Employee

A high-performing employee consistently delivers strong results in their current role.

A high-potential employee demonstrates the capacity to succeed in roles with greater scope, complexity, or responsibility.

An employee can be high-performing without being high-potential, and a high-potential employee may still need development before taking on a larger role.

Identifying HiPo Employees at MyTalentPlanner

MyTalentPlanner takes a broader view of employee potential rather than relying on a single measure.

Leaders can consider performance, potential, behavioral insights, motivators, development needs, role requirements, and other talent information when identifying employees who may be ready for future opportunities.

These insights can support decisions around development, talent mobility, leadership growth, and succession planning.

HiPo Employees and Succession Planning

High-potential employees are often considered when organizations build succession plans for critical roles. However, being identified as HiPo does not guarantee promotion or succession.

The organization should also consider the employee’s skills, experience, readiness, development progress, career goals, and fit with the requirements of the future role.
